National Geographic's 128th Year

The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published in October 1888, just nine months after the Society itself was founded. In January 1905, the text-oriented look - closer in style to a scientific journal - gave way to a new, exciting approach to journalism. Exclusive pictorial footage taken in Tibet in 1900–1901 by two brave Russian explorers transformed the way the publication looked and how it was perceived.

This photographic style continued through the decades, earning international recognition, respect and many industry awards. Perhaps the most famous image was the June 1985 cover portrait of the 13-year-old Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula. This haunting picture became one of the world’s most recognizable and iconic images of the century.

128 years later National Geographic gets you closer to the stories that matter. Through the world’s best scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, National Geographic captivates and entertains a global community.
